Course Description: Grip & Electric
This 10-day class will cover the principles and concepts used by the Grip & Electric Departments in lighting a scene, specifically exploring the typical equipment used in lighting and masking. Grip & Electric staff work in tandem on set for each scene of the production. and this course mimics the same practical relationship by combining these two departments into one class. Participants will learn the differences in lighting for interior, exterior, days, nights, on location and within the studio. This hands-on training will prepare the participant to start working within a Grip or Electric department or film and television production.

The classes provide an in-depth look into each position: designer, supervisor, on-set costumer, shopper, ager/dyer, seamstress, and interns and assistants. The class will explore the relationships with other departments, such as stunts, special effects, sound, and props, along with discussions on the role of the union and how and where to look for employment. One session explains how to break down a script and interpret its budgetary requirements. There is a brief introduction to the costuming software, SyncOnSet, and how it helps prep, shoot, and wrap a production. This hands-on training will prepare the participant to start working within a costume department or film and television production.
